North London derby postponed after Arsenal’s request

The Premier League have confirmed that Sunday’s North London derby has been postponed following a request from Arsenal.

The Gunners cannot fulfil the fixture as they don’t have 13 outfield players available from the registered 25-man squad.

A formal request was made yesterday. The league’s governing body has officially announced that the game will be rescheduled.

Football Today verdict:

The Gunners suffered fresh injuries in midweek against Liverpool. Cedric Soares was taken off early while Bukayo Saka picked up a knock.

There is always the option to play with the Under 23s, but a precedent has been set by the Premier League with recent postponements.

It was initially deemed that only COVID-19 cases would contribute to the rescheduling of fixtures before injuries were also taken into account.

Earlier this month, AFCON absentees were highlighted by Liverpool as they requested EFL to postpone the first leg of the League Cup semi-final.

The Gunners had a valid reason to postpone their fixture within the rules, and their request has now been granted.

The decision will undoubtedly frustrate Tottenham Hotspur, who will have fancied their chances against an under-strength opposition.

Mikel Arteta’s side are missing several players at the moment. The Gunners could have a full-strength squad for the rescheduled derby.

Arsenal’s next fixture will come against Liverpool in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday.
