Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager for the rest of the season.

The German agreed a deal with the Red Devils last week, and they have now made a formal announcement.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked earlier this month after a run of five league defeats from seven matches.

Michael Carrick has since been in temporary charge, and he could continue to do so for the time being.

The 40-year-old helped the Red Devils to a Champions League win on the road to Villarreal last week.

This was followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Red Devils have sealed a deal with Rangnick after securing his release from Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow.

However, the experienced tactician has yet to receive a work permit. Carrick will continue to handle the first-team.

It appears likely that the former United midfielder will manage the club against Arsenal on Thursday.

The Red Devils are winless in the last six league meetings against the Gunners, and will be keen to put things right.

Meanwhile, Rangnick will take up a consultancy role with the Mancunian giants for two years following his interim role.
