Premier League Saturday Predictions – Matchday 13

Another exciting Premier League weekend jammed-full of cracking fixtures is lying ahead of us.

Let’s cut to the chase and have a look at the three most realistic Premier League picks for Saturday.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United

Arsenal and Newcastle United go head-to-head at the Emirates Stadium in Saturday’s early afternoon showdown.

Despite falling down from an eight-match unbeaten league streak (W6, D2) at the hands of Liverpool last time out, Mikel Arteta’s team are overwhelming favourites to get back to winning ways here.

Unbeaten in their last five Premier League home fixtures (W4, D1), the Gunners go up against a Newcastle side they’ve defeated in 16 of their previous 17 top-flight H2Hs (L1).

Furthermore, since slumping to a narrow 1-0 loss in September 2010, Arsenal have won their subsequent nine league meetings with the Magpies at home while keeping a clean sheet in each of the last five.

There’s no doubt the wealthy Saudi owners will eventually demand European qualification, but Newcastle’s solitary task at this point is finding their first league win this term (D6, L6).

The Tyneside outfit already have a piece of history to defy, as just one team in the history of a 38-game Premier League season avoided relegation following a 12-game winless start.

Eddie Howe’s men have conceded a league-high 27 goals this season and remain the only team in the competition yet to keep a single clean sheet so far.

So all signs point in one direction.

Prediction: Arsenal to win / Arsenal to score over 1.5 goals

Liverpool vs Southampton

Not many European sides are superior to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, and mid-table Premier League strugglers Southampton are not one of them.

After last weekend’s 4-0 romping of Arsenal in the Premier League, the Reds went on to beat Porto 2-0 in midweek Champions League action and set themselves up nicely for this fixture.

In this David vs Goliath clash, the Merseysiders tend to run riot against the Saints when they meet at Anfield, having won their last four such H2Hs by an aggregate score of 12-0.

Free-scoring Liverpool head into proceedings as the only Premier League side to have found the net in all 12 matches this season, scoring a league-high average of 2.91 goals per game.

Delivering action from the get-go, Klopp’s players have scored the division-high 16 first-half goals to date, which sums up their all-out-attack system in a nutshell.

The home side’s devastating firepower should be enough to overwhelm 13th-placed Southampton that have racked up just one win from six Premier League travels this term (D2, L3).

Prediction: Liverpool to score over 2.5 goals / Over 1.5 first-half goals

Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa

Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard come face-to-face for the first time as managers, as Crystal Palace take on Aston Villa in an exciting Premier League fixture at Selhurst Park.

Since succumbing to a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool in mid-September, the Londoners have gone from strength to strength in the Premier League, racking up a seven-game unbeaten run (W2, D5).

Although they’ve earned a reputation as the ‘stalemate kings,’ having played out more draws (seven) than any other English side this term, Palace play for history here.

Having avoided defeat in their opening six Premier League home outings (W2, D4), the Eagles could start a new top-flight campaign unbeaten in their first seven home games for the first time since 1990/91.

Standing in their way will be a Villa side that returned to winning ways with a 2-0 home triumph over Brighton last time out, halting a five-game losing run in the Premier League in the process.

After painting his managerial debut at Villa Park with flying colours, Gerrard will be aiming to navigate the Lions to their first back-to-back league wins this season.

However, it would require Villa to beat the odds and recent H2H history in the capital, as they’ve lost five of their last six away league match-ups versus Palace (W1).

Prediction: Draw / Both teams to score
